Tithing is a Bible truth

by Ken Hemphill A morning news program once devoted a segment to the question of whether the Bible teaches tithing. The reporter featured a book by Russell Kelly entitled “Should the Church Teach Tithing?” As a whole, the program had a decidedly negative overtone when it came to the biblical practice of stewardship we call “tithing.” Most of the arguments… Read more →

VIDEO: Building 429 on the Power of a Song

by LifeWay.com Staff on Thursday, August 23, 2012

Christian band Building 429 discusses the key to writing a song that connects with people: get out of the way and let God move. Songs focused on Jesus truly make an impact says drummer Michael Anderson. “[God] lifts those songs up.” And that’s the story behind the band’s hit, “Where I Belong.”

The song was introduced during a worship gathering at lead singer Jason Roy’s church in Clarksville, Tenn., where he serves as the worship pastor. “There was something special about [the song] before we even recorded it,” says Roy. “It instantly connected. I think there is some power in that line, ‘Take this world and give me Jesus.'” God is choosing to use the song, Roy says, and that alone is driving its success.

“Where I Belong” set a new record on the Billboard National Christian Audience chart and held the top spot for 15 consecutive weeks. It also was on AC Monitored charts for 11 weeks and now has more than 262,792,300 impressions to date. The song is on the band’s fifth studio project, Listen to the Sound, which released in May 2011.

Touring and performing for audiences all over the world has shown the group, which also includes guitarist Jesse Garcia and bassist Aaron Branch, that people are passionate about God wherever you go. “When you go around the world, your mind just opens to how big and powerful this God is that we serve,” says Roy.

They also discuss from personal experience the impact that worship and youth pastors can have in the lives of people in their church: “You may not be able to see the fruit of your labor now, but be assured that when you invest in people and invest with truth … great things can happen,” says Roy. “You can become the person who is investing in the leaders of tomorrow.”
